Outdoor Virtual Sculpture Garden

Outdoor Virtual Sculpture Garden

Start shaping your virtual environment

  • Date:14 Jul 2012
  • Location: Governors Island
  • Address: Governors Island, New York, NY
  • Time: 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM
  • Bring your iPhone or Android smartphone (or tablet) and enter the augmented reality block building playground. Experience a revival of your good old LEGO days, or take your present day Mindcraft skills to the streets.

Familiarize yourself with the outdoor sculpturing app first, then improve your virtual modelling skills in a typical sculpture class setting – with the obvious still life and life models of course. Next, join the creation of a collective tower of ambition, arising as a gesamtkunstwerk in the multi-user parallel reality of Brooklyn. The sky is not the limit for members of the Outdoor Virtual Sculpture Guild.

Designer: Sander Veenhof, Tabo Goudswaard, Mark Skwarek,

Sander Veenhof (sndrv.nl) studied “unstable media” at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Being an adept of digital and virtual realities and fascinated by the intrinsic lack of impossibilities of these domains, Veenhof now pursues his fascination throughout the physical realm thanks to Augmented Reality which has turned the world into a programmable environment. With his creations for our geographically-connected data-reality, he explores the practical and conceptual opportunities for artistic expression within the new hybrid semi-digital space. He is joined in these efforts by the Augmented Reality artist collective Manifest.AR, which he co-founded after the full-scale uninvited AR exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York he organized with fellow members of the group.

Tabo Goudswaard (www.tabogoudswaard.nl) is Social Designer. He develops creative strategies for social issues. The effect of his work is on a relational level. New relations are being generated. At this moment he is modelling a research programme for Social Design commissioned by Premsela, the Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion: identifying Social Design and specify its value for the development of design. He is developing a Smartphone-app for “Parallel Participation”. He is a guestlecturer on Social Design at several Dutch art academies. His work was recently commissioned by consultancy agency Twynstra en Gudde and the Dutch Ministery of Infrastructure and the Environment.

In 2010 he finished the educational programme for ‘Critical Social Designer’ at the No Academy, a Laboratory for Art & Society in Amsterdam. He graduated in 2009 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Fine Arts department. Before this he earned his bachelor degree in Cultural and Social Design.

Mark Skwarek (markskwarek.com) is a new media artist working to bridge the gap between virtual reality and the real world by using Augmented Reality technology. He is one of the founding members of the AR artist group manifest.AR. Skwarek earned his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design’s Digital Media Department. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, where he is also a researcher-in-residence. Skwarek has exhibited in various venues, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; ISEA; the CyberArts Festival; the Sunshine International Art Museum, Beijing; and the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois.
